My personal opinion (and I bet your average user would agree) is that hiding the notch and wasting the screen is worse than just embracing it.
My favorite thing is that in Android Pie Google built around this huge notch by making the status bar thicker when you pull down the notification shade. It's all black so you might not even notice, but the OS compensated for 3 XL notch even on non-notch hardware.
