Notch on, notch off. Current Android P developer option, which isn't new. Not sure yet if the option Google has confirmed is this, or some kind of user-facing setting that will put time/date/notifs up there.pic.twitter.com/4cpebmUoYq

Stephen Hall Retweeted Made by Google

Update: Looks like the 'developer options' option is all we're getting.https://twitter.com/madebygoogle/status/1049799639904542720 …

Hi there! We’ve added an option in 'Developer options' to hide the display cutout (a.k.a. notch). Learn more here: https://goo.gl/gLdVw6  Hope this info helps.

My personal opinion (and I bet your average user would agree) is that hiding the notch and wasting the screen is worse than just embracing it.

Even this implementation is junk. Why they didn't push notifications up there but use black to hide is beyond me.

I wish they at least kept the notifications in the black area to give you more real estate. Missed opportunity.

If you look at some of the screen shots google provided, the notification items (time, bt, wifi, etc.) are in the notch when its hidden.

Review videos show the notifications up there when the notch is hidden, so it’s not like the developer options...pic.twitter.com/pf3Arwb957

That's just when the current app doesn't theme the status bar, the area turns black like normal

Huh, that actually isn't bad. But I'd like to see an option to keep the notifications up in the flanks. I think I'll still be plenty happy with the regular 3
