(the issue that came up before is: many ppl from outside the US have trouble getting into US, and many (esp) students in US have trouble getting back from outside. so mixing it up btw US & Canada--to say nothing of having it outside those two--spreads the difficulty somewhat.)

(and for completeness, the last time NAACL / ACL-in-the-Americas was outside of USA was 2017, in Vancouver. COLING 2018 was also USA, EMNLP'16 was USA and more recent EMNLP have been outside of North America.)

note: iirc, 2018 & 2019 were decided concurrently (& i was around in those discussions) so i was surprised at 2019 cuz i had forgotten the original decision :). i'm indeed surprised at 2020 and why

What would be better? ACL moves around, banning it from the US doesn't seem wise. The only other option would be to move NAACL to Canada, but this was probably decided before the whole discussion happened
-
better: not all 3 in the US? at least one in Canada or elsewhere in the Americas? the original discussion that I was aware of came around early 2017 as part of the question of where NAACL 2018 should be held. so it was definitely before any of these decisions was made
-
actually, I'm glad you asked because I'm thinking more about the history and i think i was partially wrong. iirc, 2018 & 2019 were decided concurrently (& i was there) so i was only surprised at 2019 because i had forgotten the original decision :). i'm indeed surprised at 2020.

this is one of those time "edit tweet" would be nice :P (though tbh i think it shouldn't exist)

Helpful to change "would" to "wouldn't"

Doesn’t eacl becoming annual and establishing an Asian chapter, presumably with an annual conference, mitigate this?
-
probably somewhat. naacl standalone is diff from acl of course, since acl'20 will have a much more international draw (and therefore more people adversely affected). naacl may draw slightly less from Asia/Europe due to that though. there were certainly issues at naacl'18.
-
(the anecdotal evidence is surely undersampled, cuz many ppl decide where to submit based on whether they think they'll be able to go) that said, i take your point that more localized conferences will help. though those also seem highly biased in their choice of venues :(

Biased in terms of...? Countries chosen?

Happening for CVPR too :/ Sure wish it’d come to Canada someday.https://twitter.com/CSProfKGD/status/1016412715043127296?s=20 …
-
idk anything about CVPR organization. is it explicitly a US-based org? is it always US?
-
They’re not explicitly US-based. CVPR is co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and the Computer Vision Foundation (CVF). Both orgs serve globally. Hell, CVPR ‘21 was going to be in Toronto but got pulled because ICCV is being held in Canada the same year.
-
I see. I can see argument for having one in Canada one in US in same year (presupposing that US/CA are the only options on the table) to spread out travel woes better; I'd imagine that's why it was pulled? Does seem suboptimal given that there's like... a whole world out there :)
-
Yeah I see their reasoning but like you said, there’s a whole world out there. I don’t mind so much that it was pulled from Toronto, rather more bothered that it was put back to the US.
-
yeah I hear you. i'm on the fence about whether i agree with the reasoning i gave (i think it's much more complex than twitter can really handle), but i think it's at least a reasonable position to argue from.
-
I totally get ya
