today my CS professor verified my imposter syndrome by saying "you're a good student, but here at Harvard there are some really great and really talented students" when he said that memories of loneliness and exclusion within the department flooded my mind, and I started crying

Hakeem, I read your entire thread: am a Comp Sci PhD candidate at Penn and am available if you want to discuss how I dealt with some analogous experiences. Also looks like you could use supportive profs.
@thcormen@mattblaze@SteveBellovin have been great. https://twitter.com/hakeemangulu/status/1222725681664139264?s=21 …https://twitter.com/hakeemangulu/status/1222725681664139264 … -
With zero context on my research progress or graduation plan a professor in my department told his students not to socialize with me as I am a “bad influence” — I did not take/clear whatever courses he thought that I should have cleared by whatever time. https://t.co/ygVSfDaAdQ https://twitter.com/hakeemangulu/status/1222725688823730176?s=21 …

Not sure it feels better but once you’re out of there no one will care about your grades. They’ll care about your character and work ethic, precisely those things that you exhibit.

Proud of you for sharing this and recognizing ways this was wrong. It is absolutely wrong to classify a person based on subjective performance standards. You are more than that one assignment or class. And, yes, study groups can act in ways you describe.

the best advice i ever got was from my dad (who's also jamaican!): always walk into a room like you belong there, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. i've been in your shoes, especially in hoity academia, and i'd try to remember this. it helps! hang in there.

after you're done needing grades and maybe recommendations from that professor you should let him know that there are maybe some great CS teachers at Harvard, but the great, great CS minds and teachers are over at MIT.

This isn’t a comment on the racist parts of your story but as a Black professor I wish our students didn’t worry about GPAs so much this intense pressure to be amazing is so unhealthy - it’s all driven by capitalist scarcity but it also works to amplify imposter syndrome

Let me clarify I teach at a private ivy SLAC so my students of color are also doing 1001 things on campus in a highly driven environment and I want you to know your true value will never be quantifiable in the arbitrary gaps between a B+ and A-
