Same over here. Just two days ago. One of the most condescending (and irrelevant) ones I ever got. Took me an entire day and a bucket of ice cream to pick up the pieces.

Probably anonymous reviewer? I think reviewers should not be anonymous, they should be held accountable for what is published.
-
I think having non-anonymous reviews would probably help with mean-ness in peer review but it also might create a different set of problems (like junior researchers who are afraid to fully speak their minds).

YES! “any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a good carpenter to build one.” This should be required reading.

Some reviews are so mean. Even though I spent a decade in the USA working exclusively in scientific endeavors, I still get "write in proper English" kind of comments - just because of my name.
-
That. is. terrible. I don't have experience with that myself, and have only had to deal with 'regular' peer-review meanness, but completely sympathize. Good science is good science and should be reviewed as such.

Ugh, sorry. Reviewers should be able to be critical without being horrible. Here’s the saga of the worst peer review experience I ever had. http://chelseapolis.com/blog/how-a-top-medical-journal-failed-to-protect-my-work-and-the-broader-scientific-community …

OMG, Dr. Polis. Your peer review experience sounds just awful!!! I am sorry that you had to go through this!!!!!
