Set all the coins to heads. Turn the coin over that is pointed to. When your friend comes into the room they know that the square with tails is the one!
-
You're not allowed to say how the coins are initially arranged.

Also, does the friend know the prior arrangement?

No - otherwise the problem would be easy!

Ok this is now driving me mad. Been thinking about it for hours. Is there anywhere I can find the solution? Otherwise I won’t sleep tonight and I need to, I have work in the morning!
-
I'm glad you're enjoying it! I puzzled over it for a full weekend. It's a good idea to start with a 2x2 and then a 4x4 board first.

One other qstn. You say you are "allowed" to flip one coin. Does that mean you have an option not to flip any coin if you don't want to?
-
It is possible to solve the problem if the coin flip is forced, but you can try it without this and see if you get any other solutions!
