Proof-of-stake is a great alternative to proof-of-work since it's far less energy intensive. On the other hand, pure POS systems limit consensus participation. Proof-of-useful-work could solve both problems, so long as the hardware can be trusted: https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/179.pdf
