I'm having some really mixed feelings about coding today. I am supposed to mentor some kids to do the hour of code from @codeorg https://code.org/ , so we watched the video that is there about why coding matters.

Video there talks about how awesome it is to code, how we're changing the world, and how jobs are great. It's a false narrative. People who write code are not today's rockstars. We are not valued. Despite what

Sorry you feel that way. FYI the @codeorg message isn’t that everybody should learn to code, to become coders. It’s that computer science is changing everything, so schools should teach it -- to future lawyers, nurses, scientists, managers, and yes, coders.

I started out as a coder myself, then moved into product management, venture capital, and so much more, none of which would have been possible without my computer science background. If you’re not happy as a coder, consider the adjacent careers. Happy New Year

I think what makes me unhappy is realizing that the best thing I can do for my career would be to quit coding. All of those adjacent careers that you mention carry higher status and pay better. Anyway, Happy New Year to you too, and thanks for creating
