Meritocracies are fundamentally impossible in any situation. Less attainable than perfect markets in econ & that's pretty much a crock.
I suppose day-trading is mostly a meritocracy. The stock market doesn't know who you are. Nor does a computer. But humans/society add bias.

Meritocracy over what time period? What starting capital? Even in that situation how you would define & measure has nuances.

Merit in any situation is subjective, multifaceted, and difficult to ascertain.
