Inspired by a Twitter exchange, I wrote LinkedIn recommendations for all my past employees, starting with the first person I hired, in 1996. After 100 recommendations, it was a joy to hear back and see how people's careers have progressed.
It was most fun to see college-hires turn into VPs or founders. So much of the work of a manager is to mentor and invest in people. I recommend this exercise to managers, if for no other reason than to help you think about your current team in terms of their future potential.
