Public service announcement: Just because something is a “nonprofit” doesn’t mean the creators don’t pay themselves an egregiously large salary. Don’t assume all your donations go directly to charity.

FYI my salary at @codeorg for full-time work since 2013: $0. Of course, I’ve had the privilege & good fortune to be able to live off past savings and investments. That said, I‘ve also resisted the option of paying myself a salary, so that 0% of donations to @codeorg enrich me.

If this led to prospective donors expecting other nonprofits to have $0-salaried execs as well, would that be a good thing?

But that’s a problem too, this means that only independently wealthy can do nonprofit work.

This is often true- many of the largest non profits are lead by wealthy individuals. 🤷‍♂️

And very noble, and generous. Also - privileged. If the sector is designed for rich founders and well-to-do retirees, it excludes anyone that needs a paycheck (which is everyone else). Unless we make it okay for nonprofits to pay decent wage, the sector will remain stunted.

That is a very broad statement. I think it is important to look at the corporate governance including disclosure of salaries. Great NPO will disclose the salaries of the management and will have a great board that will keep everyone accountable.
