My family fled a war to come to the US after the Iran hostage crisis when I was 11.
I remember being bullied to “go home.” Had we “gone home,” I may not have survived the war. And I wouldn’t have started @codeorg, which has helped hundreds of millions of students globally.

It is a nation of immigrants but it also values meritocracy. The immigration system today is not meritocratic at all, and if anything, has created a moral hazard for people to immigrate illegally.
