Many, and from my day almost all, programmers never had CS in high school. As long as you learn problem solving, coding is just a tool. Proper algorithm development requires more math background anyways, so are you learning more than syntax?
CS in K-12 begins with computational thinking, problem solving, but also creativity. Platforms like @codeorg and @scratch let students learn a ton in drag-drop before they learn any syntax. It is more engaging/creative for students. A “math background” is nice but not required.
To a large degree that's my point. You can learn these things with or without computing. I'm all for CS but I think the skills can also be taught in other ways
Got it. One point most people miss is that students enjoy the creativity of CS more than most topics, making CS one of their favorite subjects behind only the arts:https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-classes-do-students-like-most-hadi-partovi/ …
Learning by playing? Novel idea despite the millennia of evidence!
