Most of the mathematicians I know aren’t super well equipped to deal with things like endemic poverty or climate change policy.
I hope that’s not true. I think anybody smart can rise to the occasion if properly motivated. Many of the world’s most pressing problems require mathematical solutions.

I think that’s true to some extent, but there’s some implicit assumption intelligence is a singular attribute that cuts across all disciplines and types of thinking, and don’t think the cog psych literature supports this.
