I hope that’s not true. I think anybody smart can rise to the occasion if properly motivated. Many of the world’s most pressing problems require mathematical solutions.

I'm not sure about that. We do need more 'knowlege-bridging' people. Many discoveries in math and physics did not initially seem to have clear applications, then we came with lasers, high-speed comms, PET scans, etc.
