This could be the future of voting, and perhaps one of the greatest uses of the blockchain. Hope it works! https://money.cnn.com/2018/08/06/technology/mobile-voting-west-virginia-voatz/ …

Note: I’m not suggesting that *this* implementation could be the future (I’ve done no research on “Voatz”), but that technology can and will improve on the shortcomings of paper, solving both for convenience/turnout (to please Ds) and for integrity (to please Rs)

Consider, Estonia has similar scale population and GDP as West Virginia, and has had smartphone voting for many years, successfully. (And they are moving to an internally-managed blockchain to decentralize public recordkeeping for audit purposes)

(That said, Estonia is run on a much more secure digital ID system for the whole population)

And, as others on this thread have pointed out, this particular implementation in West Virginia has some obvious flaws, but that doesn’t mean the actual concept is wrong.https://twitter.com/gossithedog/status/1026603800365330432?s=21 …

This is going to backfire. West Virginia are moving to mobile phone voting for this midterm elections - software is a ‘Blockchain voting system’ by “Votez”, a 2018 startup with $2m of funding https://money.cnn.com/2018/08/06/technology/mobile-voting-west-virginia-voatz/index.html …

I am a huge #HourOfCode/@Codeorg fan, but have to disagree here: such technology-heavy solutions are bad for voting security, anonymity and auditability. Paper ballots and many officials/volunteers may seem 'inefficient', but are the best choice for a (mostly) undisputed outcome.

There may be room for technology in improving the voting and counting processes, but having the voter-readable and auditable paper ballots in case of doubt is a huge safeguard.

Paper ballots like the old days. Plus GOP will never let this happen. It will make it much easier for color and poor people to vote. Something they are afraid of.

Only Russian election hackers should want this to be the future of voting. Read this threadhttps://mobile.twitter.com/gossithedog/status/1026603800365330432?s=21 …
