While I'm glad the freakout over @familytreenow has gone viral, I wish the same care was taken with Spokeo, PeekYou, Instant Checkmate, etc.

@hacks4pancakes @familytreenow I think the information that's hidden behind the paywall deters enough people that it's not a ' risk...

@Ginsberg5150 @hacks4pancakes I use an automated service once or twice a year to auto-opt me out. Just have to trust THAT service

@n8zwn @Ginsberg5150 @hacks4pancakes I used Safe Shepherd a few times. Was legit last time I looked.

@oscaron @n8zwn @hacks4pancakes I don't think you can hide from these sites Datamining=future. Use bogus info to muddy the waters

@Ginsberg5150 @oscaron @n8zwn And don't give you kids unique names. I have had to pay awful legal fees.

@Ginsberg5150 @oscaron @n8zwn But at some point the choice becomes exist (bad) or do not exist (also bad)

@hacks4pancakes Are you familiar with a way to opt out of them all? I know https://www.privacyduck.com/services/  will do it for you for a fee.

@n8zwn No, sadly all the services I know of do it for a (substantial) fee.

@hacks4pancakes guide is updated to include all the ones I see naughty folks using on a regular basis. And it links to a more exhaustive one

@hacks4pancakes also included some obvious things to reduce exposure, like donotcall and credit preapproval offer optout. See pinned tweet

@Digital4rensics @hacks4pancakes technically it's a ToS violation for the Family Tree site so I didn't pursue it further. Also felt creepy.
