In security and hacking, we tend to be hyper focused people who care a great deal about technical details and cool knowledge. We like to share that with others. In general fabulous, but sometimes it goes a little too far when we try to inform people about their area of expertise.

I’ve noticed a trend of people (every gender and age) critiquing accomplished infosec colleagues’ tweets over their content when they interpret the data as sensitive to exploitation or usable for OSINT. These critiques are usually well meaning but very tone deaf and loud.

As an example, when my mom was dying (years ago), I very carefully set up a remote PO Box to post online for cards and letters. The community was incredibly awesome, but of course a few people complained that I had just doxed myself (clearly, without even googling the address).

I suggest, when you are going to comment like this, you: A) Respect colleagues’ expertise enough to consider they may have weighed risk. B) Have professional courtesy to discuss privately. C) Understand that assuming a major lapse in professional judgement is a profound insult.

I'd add that it may take all the social indoctrination and surveillance technology that China has to offer to simply DIVERT this behavior into their new social credit program. Super interesting experiment.
