Its true. Ive also seen it with malware/BlackHats use of Google API where companies just allow/do not question/investigate the traffic because it appears to (or is) originate from a Google owned domain.

I have to wonder why they're doing something as inefficient as manually wheeling around a cart when GPS location spoofing has been available for mobile platforms for a while. It's pretty robust thanks to AR games like Pokemon Go. Surely you can just code the phones to fake it?

Not sure but I see your point. There are plenty of open source GPS spoofing apps/methods. I'd have to think some could be tweaked for mass synchorized/automated spoofing especially with the help of tools like Xposed. Some larger smartphone mining/trolling farms must do similar.
