Patching is the most important part. A firewall won't help if somebody brings an infected (because unpatched) PC and connects it to the LAN.

Or puts an infected home PC onto the 'secure' VPN.

Its not that simple. To some companies the fix requires major arch reorg that is costly especially when old machines are grandfathered in.

Well this IS that time. You can either do major arch reorg now or you can do it while its down & the customers are screaming. Now is better

I read that MS in unprecedented fashion have issued patch for unsupported XP and 2003. But you should seriously get rid of unsupported OS.
