        Patching is the most important part. A firewall won't help if somebody brings an infected (because unpatched) PC and connects it to the LAN.

        Its not that simple. To some companies the fix requires major arch reorg that is costly especially when old machines are grandfathered in.

        I read that MS in unprecedented fashion have issued patch for unsupported XP and 2003. But you should seriously get rid of unsupported OS.
