A few things that y’all should consider when thinking about homelessness and substance abuse — *Substance abuse is ON AVERAGE more likely to be a RESULT of homelessness rather than a cause of it *NOT ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE USE DRUGS, but for those who do, recovery is IMPOSSIBLE

*The culture of criminalizing the homeless and assuming that they’re homeless because of their own fault is WRONG. it ignores the COUNTLESS other reasons for why people are homeless, like illness, unemployment, denial from social services, etc. Far larger structural issues exist

*VERY FEW homeless people (less than 5% of the national homeless population) has had access to addiction counseling or rehabilitation programs within the last YEAR. that means 95% of homeless people struggling with addiction must do it on their own

*Substance Abuse occurs in tandem with mental health concerns — rather than lock up the minority of homeless people who use drugs, why not get them mental health counseling that attempts to resolve these problems at their core?

*Homelessness will NOT be resolved through your donations. Giving a dollar to the next person you see on the street will not resolve the problematic nature of a society that doesn’t attenuate to mental health concerns, and it will not give someone a long term, sustainable home

but the POINT IS that it allows for a temporary relief from a more pressing social and political issue that requires broader dialogue, bringing in different voices and stakeholders into a collective conversation about the causes and consequences of displacements.

but until then, STOP STIGMATIZING AND STEREOTYPING UNSHELTERED INDIVIDUALS AS ADDICTS. Recognize your own privilege and internalized elitism before you speak on this issues. listen to homeless people. humble yourself

You don’t discuss people choosing to spend THEIR money the way they like anywhere in your thread....?

LMFAO if either of u read it you would realize this isn’t about you, it’s about destigmatizing people for activities they’re nearly forced to do
-
Well actually it is about us lol. I’m not arguing what you’re saying but you said to read the thread to clairify where you discussed people choosing to spend their money how they like and it was not addressed? Did you read your thread?
