Question: is there any good article or essay about all the ways things can get... 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯? As a kid tracking in mud, I was puzzled by the laws of cleanliness: dirtiness can be moved but not destroyed; all things only get dirtier; things do not spontaneously clean themselves.

Spare a thought for the potentially millions of worlds where sustainable ecosystems didn't evolve or didn't work out and everyone that could care ended up buried in muck.
-
That seems unlikely. AFAIK there's nothing particularly special about digesting lipofuscins and other aging by-products, and it's inevitable if you have enough life for it to potentially be a problem. Heck, bacteria will digest oil or plastics for you or live in nuclear reactors!

Fascinating question. I want to know too. What are the cleaning primitives (filters, sorting, selective dissolution...), the primitive anti-cleaning processes (diffusion, dislocation, growth...) and can we quantify their thermodynamic costs?
-
One neat point is that a messy room does not have high entropy thermodynamically speaking: books out of order are negligible compared to air molecules. The cost of sorting them is very different from chemical sorting, but since we do it by muscle power (=chemical) seems same.

Because of damage caused by light in the retina the cells there continuously elongate towards the back of the eye to be eaten. This dilutes the damage in the retina while in old age the layer eating the chunks gets filled up and macular degeneration ensues https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macular_degeneration?wprov=sfla1 …pic.twitter.com/mWWMneKxtM

There's been recent work on repurposing wood digesting enzymes from fungi to degrade the garbage. https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/rej.2018.2146 …

... wow ... NOW I'm wondering how the bacteria clean themselves? No reply necessary, wondering will keep me happy for hours, on and off!
