Browsing my <=2012 links for feeding my subreddit, maybe a quarter are redirected, paywalled, moved elsewhere, deleted, or the whole site is just... gone. It would be much worse if I hadn't started archiving (https://www.gwern.net/Archiving-URLs ) back then for making copies.
But as I mirror pages & websites & PDFs, http://gwern.net increasingly feels like a museum, or mausoleum. A gradually accreting memorial to what I liked on the Internet of old: 'Behold!' So much gone. Where are those I remember now, the inactive, the vanished, or the dead?
What they were then - dons, why_, Yudkowsky, muflax, Shane Legg, Numbers-kun, Satoshi, bochan_bird, Mark Pilgrim, Narayanan, Aaron Schwartz, DPR, Julian Assange, Clay Shirky, Imposter, Seth Roberts, Steve Yegge, Darwin, Phil Goetz, Hal Finney, RMS, the_avid or Naggum? Gone? Gone?
Rereading old stuff isn't all depressing, though. Notes: - I don't remember many, but much are worth rereading - deep learning/AI progress 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 wasn't expected in 2012 except by Schmidhuber; see everyone's comments on Quoc Le's cat paper... - brain emulation disappointed
- Hsu was right about genetics - I was right about Bitcoin; - but wrong in drastically underestimating the Reproducibility Crisis; have to drop a lot of these psychology links because they've been shown either wrong or uncredible - likewise in bio - sirtuin/resveratrol, anyone?
- politics never changes (eg 7 years later, David Brin's blog is still awful) - sub note: the War on Terror and the Middle East also never ends - the China critics may finally be right - we are all transhumanists now - methods > models > matters > memories
