I declined to vote, as I suspect I am an outlier adn should not be counted. I buy myself vast quantities of socks (probably 30/3months) and my wife steals them, and presumably consumes them. I currently have 4 pairs I purchased 15 pairs in late november.

How is it possible to buy that many socks and not be buried under a hoarder-style pile...? 🤔 (Perhaps your wife has a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_(disorder) … or is secretly a Siamese cat. Or both.)

I dare not speculate what happens to the socks. I suspect dark sorceries are at work in my home.

Sometimes when I know I'll need good socks for a future event (wedding, etc.), I pull a pair, sometimes weeks in advance, and put them in my gunsafe. I'm not kidding. I really do this. It's the only way to ensure their safety.

I feel observed, I just did a massive socks cleanup to get rid of socks I don't use anymore, I don't know how they accumulated so fast.

The boiling frog metaphor really should be replaced by the disappearing socks metaphor: If someone loses half their socks at once, they'll go buy new ones. If they lose one sock a week, they'll wait until they're desperately low on socks before buying more.

I replaced all my socks with Darn Toughs which have a lifetime warranty. Super comfortable and hole-free (so far). They're expensive but worth it, especially if you amortize over your lifetime!

I also settled on Darn Tough after testing many brands. My sense was the socks started off slightly worse, but kept better, giving them the edge over the whole lifecycle. I own about 14 DT socks that are identical.

Ive gone through several phases w socks. I now buy several dozen pairs, all identical at once. When I run low, due to wear, I typically can't buy same brand, so start over. I try to rotate through them so they all wear out roughly evenly.

This is precisely what I do. I'm currently at the end of the cycle, and have procrastinated purchasing the new batch because I can't buy exactly what I currently have and dread having to figure out what I should buy this time around.

I'd be curious to see what type of socks people are buying too. Cotton vs wool, mainly.
