What probability do you assign to this conditional claim: the world would have been better off overall if Nazis had won WWII?

Patriotism. I think this is more clear with WW1. Typical British soldier wouldn't have switched sides if they could be persuaded Germany winning was better for the good of the world overall, and viceversa.
One of the interesting things about _The American Soldier_ surveys is apparently they show how ignorant about the war most WWII soldiers were. Most of them had not the slightest idea about 'better for the good of the world'. They fought because they had to, and for their buddies.

(Apparently this also got in the way of the US propaganda efforts. You can't get fired up by the war propaganda if you (a) are too dumb to think abstractly about geopolitics and fascism vs democracy or (b) don't know much of anything about Germany/Japan.)

(BTW, I have copies of the 3 volumes not online yet but haven't scanned them because I want to read them first. Which will happen... not in 2018, at this rate. 2019 is looking better.)
