Red Delicious was A+ in its original incarnation. Then folks kept grafting from bud sports (=sometimes a tree throws a branch that's a little different, it's normal) w darker & darker fruit. I see it as more consistent with a post-WWII story of cuisine recovering from industrialization where the priority was feeding everyone cheaply, then richer sophisticated consumers learning how bad it is & demanding better. (Cheese, beer, wine, vegetables - everything, really.)
