Alexey Guzey added,
re genetic correlation: rgs are silent about causation direction. If genes~>myopia~>IQ or myopia<~IQ<~genes or myopia<~genes~>IQ, all would produce an rg. What's inconsistent with myopia~>IQ is stuff like East Asian myopia rates, light-signaling enrichment, & MR:
https://www.gwern.net/docs/genetics/heritable/2018-tedja.pdf … https://www.bmj.com/content/361/bmj.k2022 … https://www.nature.com/news/the-myopia-boom-1.17120 … I personally am fairly sure at this point that IQ~>myopia (through less outdoor activity/bright light) and not the other way.
Wow this is crazy high: "Sixty years ago, 10–20% of the Chinese population was short-sighted. Today, up to 90% of teenagers and young adults are. In Seoul, a whopping 96.5% of 19-year-old men are short-sighted." Especially compared to the around 50% of young adults in the USA.
Economic development taketh and it giveth - now they can afford LASIK for that myopia.
This may be a little far-fetched, but there could also be correlation between higher myopia and supposed higher IQ in East Asian countries (compared to the West). But whether it is genes → myopia → IQ or myopia ← IQ ← genes I have no idea.
How does that work given that East Asian countries were smarter before myopia rates skyrocketed? Which is what I was pointing at.
