Walter's _The Sexual Cycle of Human Warfare_ is the hardest book I've ever gotten. It took me over a decade. It's no wonder that despite huge impact on Dune, analyses like
@timoreilly's or Touponce just omit Walter entirely - can't get copies! Well, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 fixed now...1 reply 5 retweets 9 likes -

Even just skimming it, I can see echoes of Walter in Frank Herbert everywhere. It's wrong of course, but like Jungian psychiatry, it's as good literature as it is bad science. (Oddly, Walter's approach also reminds me of
@robinhanson a lot.)1 reply 0 retweets 10 likes -
dune is a masterpiece. full of nuance and subtlety... it's hard to find a comparable book

I've always thought that _Dune Messiah_ was better. :) But one of the reasons it's hard to find a comparable book is that FH's other books were all so much worse! You'd hardly suspect they were written by the same man. With D/DM, FH truly tapped into something special.

I agree that Dune and Dune Messiah stand alone, but I do think that Under Pressure, Frank Herbert's first book, and the Santaroga Barrier are also a cut above the rest of his work.

Yeah, if I had to recommend one which would be least disappointing to a Dune fan, it would probably be _Under Pressure_. I sometimes wonder if the problem was he cranked them out too fast and diluted it? Dune+DM was the slowest-gestating of all of his books AFAIK, and it shows.
