Startup idea: cutting edge weightloss clinic. Tissue costs 20kj/g to heal (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1212.3778.pdf …) vs 8.4kj food consumption, so 1g cut out / week is equivalent to a -500cal diet. Weekly cutouts produce weight loss, & costly honest signal of self-discipline, sparking arms race.

Gwern I hope this is a joke and you are not mixing up j/kJ: humans need 8,400 kj/day, not 8,400 j/day. Ethtilde is right

No, I think I multiplied right. Ref says 20kg/g, Google conversion gives a factor of 4 from kj to kcal, so -0.5kcal should take ~10 days to rebuild 1g of flesh. If that's off by orders of magnitude, that's even weirder, it takes only hours to regrow substantial flesh loss...?

This is the dumb "actually food calories are kilocalories" thing? There are 4 kcal in 1 gram of sugar. I think the limiting factor on regrowth speed is probably not energy availability

I suppose there could be a unit conversion issue somewhere. But the slowness of recovery from injuries raises interesting questions: how much exercise benefit is from the cost of repair? Are there more effective muscle/cardiovascular damage methods besides 'run or lift weights'?

(Carefully targeted ultrasounds? Hormetic levels of poisons like alcohol? Something electrical? Unusual postures? Physical pressure? Heat/cold?)

OK, I wasn't being serious here, but apparently people actually have been trying this sort of thing by focusing on hypoxia! Called 'blood flow restriction training': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vascular_occlusion_training … https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/7/10/337/htm …
