The man is not going to leave office voluntarily. The Supreme Court is too lilylivered to order the spectacle of a president exiting the White House forcibly, and even if they did... it's on the executive branch to enforce their ruling.

Also, Trump knows the NY AG (and possibly his successor's AG) would be signing his arrest warrants before his chopper left the Rose Garden helipad. I don't think he enjoys the presidency, but it's his last shield against the law.

If it weren't for the legal threat, I could see Jared and Ivanka MAYBE talking him out the door reminding him how much he loved his extravagant former life. But I doubt even they can paint a pretty enough picture of Club Fed to convince him to leave now.

I used to try to comfort myself by saying things like, well, Trump's lawyers and folks have managed to hold him back on stuff, maybe whatever CIA/NSA path he might try to take to this end will end with someone else doing the same. Then he fired those lawyers and hired Rudy.

War powers are scary, y'all. Our right to elect a president is considered a "privilege" that can be suspended at any time. I haven't found much on "delaying" an inauguration, but I seriously doubt it would be all that difficult to get away with.

And then, "oh the terrorists/agents are embedded in such-and-such media channels and using the internet to communicate." Even simple emergency powers likely provide cover for selective or total electronic communications shutdown, including the entire internet.

It all sounds extreme and audacious. But extreme and audacious are Trump's modus operandi and it's hard to deny that he's accelerating his performance of both qualities.

He's a buffoon and incompetent with little impulse control, but both those things lend themselves to extreme behavior. He fails to retain or recognize competent subordinates, but it doesn't take a mastermind to blow up a building.

Unless there's a clear and obvious consequence to retaining power, why would Trump let it go? I can't find my way to a good answer.

His administration is making who knows how many weird, shadowy connections with authoritarian governments, and Trump and his inner circle have nothing resembling morals or scruples

I wouldn’t put a lot of “unimaginable” things past these people. I think it’s naive to think otherwise
