St Willibrord was a Northumbrian missionary, sent by Saint Ecgberht to convert the Friesians in the late 7th/early 8th century. When he arrived in the low countries he spent a while smashing up various 'pagan' monuments before founding a church in Utrecht. #SaintsWorldCup

St Mary of Egypt had a difficult early life. One day she had a divine revelation upon seeing an icon of the Virgin Mary & went to live in the desert for 47 years! When she died St Zosimas of Palestine is said to have buried her body with the help of a lion!

St Guinefort is a little different to any other saint in the
#SaintsWorldCup in that he was, in fact, a greyhound. This did not stop him saving the life of a baby or performing miracles from the afterlife & his cult persisted til the 1930s despite being suppressed by the church!Show this thread

It has to be St Mary of Egypt surely? Great story of penitence. Also I love that she went to Jerusalem on pilgrimage just out of curiosity, paying her fare by prostitution. Then God intervened. You just never know what is going to happen!

I also enjoyed the aspects of Zozimus believing that he had achieved holy perfection, but then gets taught true humility by an elderly, female former prostitute.

I'd never heard of Guinefort so I searched Wiki (the source of all knowledge!) Cute story but what's that about killer mothers leaving their children to burn (from Stephen of Bourbon). I don't get it. Was he arguing the cult was demonic? Background anyone??? Thank you!

He was an Inquisitor. The idea that you’d worship a dog was heretical. Hence recording it.
