Wow I'm just seeing screenshots of the hastily developed Iowa caucus app, and it's really something

And second, this is just another way of saying "voters will pick the wrong person." "Dark horse candidate" just means "someone who's lower in the polls." Why are candidates who are polling badly entitled to a system that gives them an extra advantage?

First, just because this system gave us Obama doesn't prove that it selects good candidates. In 2004 the Iowa caucus gave us a mealy-mouthed bore who nobody liked. Sequential voting creates strong pressure to second-guess and vote based on who other people are voting for.

So there's an argument that we need a small state to vote first because it allows promising yet underappreciated dark horse candidates to gain momentum, as proved by Barack Obama winning Iowa in 2008. There are two problems with this idea.

We see being smug about doing good things as the worse offense than not doing good things, and then we perceive anyone who does good things to be smug, whether they are nor not. QED, doing good things makes you bad.

Defenses of the sequential system are all ex post facto rationalizations — we’re stuck with this system; what is good about it? But you can’t make a case for it from scratch. You can’t explain how it’s democratic to let certain people go first and have much greater influence.

We see a similarly negative response to people who change their lifestyles to help the environment--you get less pushback if you say "I drive a hybrid to save money" than if you say "I drive a hybrid to reduce my carbon footprint."

For those just joining, we've hit the part of the Iowa caucuses where the "city goes to sleep", and the non-viable candidates get to choose one viable candidate to eliminate

First-past-the-post voting is not the only possible option--I'm a big fan of ranked voting and runoff voting. But defenses of caucuses and early states sound suspiciously like "But if we let everyone just all vote, they'll pick the wrong person!"

"A small state has to vote first" has the same energy as "We need the electoral college or else small states will get ignored." Any electoral system that deliberately gives more weight to a certain group of voters is inherently undemocratic.

Just 15.7% of Iowa’s voting-eligible population participated in the in 2016. Even during Iowa’s record-setting turnout of the 2008 elections, it was still just 16.1%. The low turnout has to do with accessibility:
