I don't understand the use of the word "gene" in this context... Is it being used colloquially in some way? Or is the implication that computational skills are heritable in some way? Coming from a thoroughly confused bioinformatician...

When I see two peaks in my grade distribution it almost always correlates with preparation, either what they arrived in my course with or how much they did during my class. Motivation and effort are the things most strongly correlated with outcomes in my experience.
