Thought provoking as always. But after reading both your post and the responses, I'm confused on your critique of constructionism. Your conclusion seems to be either/both a) Logo is too difficult for student & teacher novices, b) constructionism only works for math & computing?

Both strike me as a misreading of the current state of constructionism. Papert is no doubt the "father of constructionism," and his work is still important to constructionist thought, but constructionism != Papert.

An interesting idea arising from Ames' book is to consider if the enthusiasm for 'CS for All' is driven by its own charismatic frame. What does it say about the new generation of those who seek the transformation of learning through computer science?

One big difference is that OLPC promised all kinds of secondary effects: Engagement with the device, literacy improvements, learning in other areas.
@CSforALL is simply trying to teach CS. I don't see them promising magic. - Još 7 drugih odgovora

Thank you so much for sharing Mark! This is such a great example of how and why scholarly thinking evolves over time. These kinds of shifts are often so invisible to the public.

Thanks, Amy! Just finished your podcast with
@ksm_csed. It's great! I'd read Knuth's "Digital Typesetting" book, which includes the paper you describe, but I hadn't thought about it as qualitative analysis. Well done!

I love this, and agree with every point you made. To me the bottom line behind some of these points is that we have to educate to diversity of thought. Thanks for this blog post.

Thanks, Margaret! Absolutely. I've come to realize that HCI has a lot to offer computing education in terms of the value for reaching a diverse audience and of methods for how to do that.

This is a fantastic post, Mark. It makes me feel better that someone as well-respected as you in the CSEd field can still look back and reflect. All teachers should be doing this, but I think with our busy schedules we don't always make time for reflection.

Very kind, Derek -- thank you!
