The hippocampus “holds in mind” future possibilities on alternating cycles of the theta rhythm— a potential mechanism of deliberation. Honored to have been a small part of this work, and stoked for the world to see Kenny’s elegant findings!

Light mediated facilitation of V1 activity is also observed during head movements in freely moving mice.

This light-dependent switch in how V1 processes head-movements is controlled by somatostatin expressing (SOM) inhibitory neurons, which are excited by head movements in dark but not in light.

While in darkness, head movements result in an overall suppression of neuronal activity, in ambient light the same head movements trigger excitation across all cortical layers. Importantly, these results are observed without any visual structure around during the rotation.

Head movements result in an overall suppression of V1 activity that depends on the activation of the vestibular organ (Figure 1). Same profile is observed for both Regular and Fast-spiking cells.

🎞️ Parrots are pretty smart birds. But that's not all: they also exhibit a high level of cooperativeness. And, as a new study shows, they readily help others, even when there is no immediate opportunity for reciprocation. 🐦

Loren Frank gave our first virtual seminar yesterday at the Institute of Neuroscience. It was a great talk and everyone enjoyed it! I see a bright future for at least some of our talks being virtual. A big plus: We can invite people from all over the world, increasing equity.
