Sad to have heard that might be closing down. But they've managed to raise $70k in just a few hours as of this tweet. As a reporter for a listener-supported station in a state with so few independent nonprofit news outlets, I feel we're all in this together.

Posting this from —please help out the lovely people. I’m still “young” within their writing group, but they’d trust me & be interested in what I can bring to the table. Please give them a hand. Times are trying in TX

Everyone, please check out this fundraiser: gofundme.com/f/laid-off-tex The $ raised here will either go directly to @TexasObserver staff like me facing layoffs at the end of this week or, should the Observer board reverse its decision, the $ will go staff via the Observer.

Heard of this minutes before story pub'd b/c Trib asked for comment. I suppose I will be arguing tomorrow for this not to happen. Assuming that's in vain, I will need fairly urgent help from people who have worked with me or liked my work figuring out freelance and a new job. twitter.com/sewellchan/sta…

I have not received a layoff notice yet, but I don't currently have reason to think it's not coming. You might see news soon about a fundraiser of some kind. I guess that's all I'll put on here just yet. Y'all's messages & work leads mean the world right now to me & my family

Wow, terrible, was a partner, we literally cross-posted something of theirs on Friday. Great magazine, very sad for the country that they're shuttering.

This is such a profound loss for Texas journalism. Some of the best journalists in the state are going to be open for work, everybody should be fighting to hire them.
