  1. Same view today. The forest is growing with more than 250 planted tree species and more than 400 planted shrubs and herbaceous plant species. matters!!

  2. To delineate the experimental area in the field all 4 corners of each 1 ha plot were marked with solid concrete poles. This will allow to trace the overall forest development over time but also the effects of treatments and species mixes for each plot.

  4. The flowers of Lasianthus curtisii are very small and white. So far we haven’t observed any pollinators in our plots.

  5. 3-5 years after the initial dense tree planting the number of stems need to be reduced to provide sufficient space for each tree and allow sunshine to reach the forest floor for the growth of a shrub layer. As a first step we only remove codominant trunks and crown lift the trees

  6. and Botanic Garden staff setting up experimental tree planting plots. The site was originally forested, but cleared of forest 1000 years ago for tea plantations. The idea is to find out which factors limit the growth of trees in abandoned, eroded agricultural land.

Accurately measuring large trees in remote tropical forests requires dedication, skill and courage. To measure the diameter of this giant Malvaceae in 's Choco, three people need to climb 10 meters. Thanks to Esteban Alvarez, Wilmar Lopez & colleagues for the images.

Species of the coffee family (Rubiaceae) are abundant in the shrub layer of Asian tropical forests. These shade demanding species are very difficult to establish in forest . Finally the first few individuals of Lasianthus curtisii are flowering in our restoration site

We believe that restoring forests has to go hand in hand with restoring . 🤝 As a recent study points out highly diverse natural forests show higher reliability in than plantations with just one or a few tree species. Read more:

It’s fascinating to see that in healthy tropical primary the top has an extremely high density of fine roots. When looking at the photo it seems very unlikely that or soil erosion are easily possible with such a dense root network.

Canopy formation in our plots starts in small islands of a few trees growing closely together. This is called nucleation and is based on the fact that the trees protect each other from harsh conditions by improving the microclimate around them.

Terrestrial orchids, such as this slipper orchid Paphiopedilum concolor, are very sensitive to habitat disturbances and are usually only found in primary forests.

such as are an important component of tropical forests. They are only found in primary or mature secondary forests with large trees, which have to be at least 50-100 years old. Current rates of have a serious impact on orchid populations.

In forest structural pruning helps to grow single trunked trees. Pruning cuts of several centimeters heal of in 2-3 years. In order to achieve a diverse, healthy and resilient forest such maintenance is essential. Just planting trees is not enough.

For a straight trunk development of broadleaf trees structural pruning is essential. Side branches are removed up to a height of ~15 meters to allow sufficient headspace for several canopy layers. The oaks in our plots have been pruned for years.
