Learn: 1. linear algebra well (e.g. matrix math) 2. calculus to an ok level (not advanced stuff) 3. prob. theory and stats to a good level 4. theoretical computer science basics 5. to code well in Python and ok in C++ Then read and implement ML papers and *play* with stuff! :-)

Cognitive scientist Barbara Tversky, author of the new book Mind in Motion, explains why spatial cognition is the foundation of thought, the brain is not a prediction machine, we edit our memories after the fact, & other insights.

We also showed that what the animal is doing not only explains variability in cortex at that moment but also in a subsequent short-term memory phase.

I'm somewhat surprised that Hawkins is so preoccupied with these spatial reference frames. He should know that the cortex does not use different methods to process different stimuli. It processes visual signals the same way as audio or tactile signals. It's all temporal. (3 of 5)

What is Data Science: Anyone training data scientists, claiming to be a data scientist or is simply exhausted by the overuse of this term needs to read Prof. Xiao-Li Meng’s recent piece: Data Science: An Artificial Ecosystem · Harvard Data Science Review.

Excited to announce this pre-print with and , about using GLM-HMMs (Hidden Markov Models with state-dependent generalized linear models governing outputs and transitions) to describe context-dependent male singing behavior during courtship (in flies!).
