… carbon, soil carbon is unlikely to be affected long term if the site is regenerated. Surely its land-use change not harvesting that is the long term threat, and the warming of soils? If Woodland is not economically viable, who will manage it and plant it? Am I off base here?

The UK is still in the midst of its greatest period of expansion in recorded history. We've literally never planted as much woodland as we have in the last 100 years ever in recorded history. You might not be fan of what's planted, but it's there.

According to Swedish official statistics from @_SLU and @Skogsstyrelsen no drastic changes in forest cutting occured during this time period.
