In the UK rail fares have just gone up. Why does this country allow such
naked profiteering?

Deutsche Bahn is wholly owned by the German government. This form of ownership is different to the UK rail franchise operations.

This is probably just supply and demand. You wouldn't have any reason to cut prices if it was as oversubscribed as rail travel is in the UK. Reduce prices to get it more profitable. Doubt it has any foundation in helping save the planet. That will just be serendipity.

it is not. The government reduced the VAT for DB from the full 19 to 7% in order to make travel by rail more attractive. Part of a programme to reduce emissions. In other words: a subsidy, paid by all of us. And a good thing, too.
