HEY GUYS if you're like super worried about coronavirus, consider writing to your representatives about how you think that it's important that we increase funding for outbreak surveillance + response + hospital epidemic preparedness programs!

Look like the German cluster of may not have been evidence for non-symptomatic transmission after all []. The authors didn't even chat with the index case to verify her *alleged* absence of symptoms... So how did they draw their conclusions? 1/2

utterly horrified to learn there was a glee cover of a song from my favorite band in 2012 and that I’ve only just learned about this

Had a chance to chat with Ed about how the ongoing outbreak feels different in comparison to the others I’ve worked on. A key takeaway, IMHO: Though the public may worry otherwise, scientists are actually learning about this novel pathogen faster than ever before.

Antibiotic resistance scares me more than the coronavirus, and what are we doing to fight it? -- New study finds 'no clear rationale’ for 45% of Medicaid patients’ antibiotic prescriptions.

Coronaviruses mutate 1-2 orders of magnitude more slowly than most other RNA viruses, since their replication enzyme has unique error correction capability. (That's not v practically relevant, but it *is* something I think about with people like EFD freaking about ~mutations~)

Guy that admits to not knowing about viral genomics continues to commentate on genomics despite high profile error in past few days. No, it doesn't seem to mutate rather fast.

I know a lot of shook software engineers and data scientists who would be interested in throwing themselves at this sort of problem.

to add on to this: during my MPH, i was part of a student volunteer group designed to be overflow support during outbreaks. we'd go in and do the data entry-type tasks so that the actual epidemiologists could do the hard work. public health doesn't have great surge capacity

Is all resistance to ceftriaxone through mutations in its target, penA? Turns out the answer is no: some clinical isolates acquired via RNApol mutations & many other isolates are a single SNP away. Led by out in

Most of the modelers responding to nCoV are doing so pro bono. There is no funding for this work. Every outbreak they drop the work they are funded to do and volunteer their expertise to help us all to understand what is happening and how to respond. 1/

Epidemics are mirrors that reflect the society they affect. I wrote about what the new coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, tells us about the world as it stands in 2020--the pace of modern science, the threat of fake news, the growth of isolationism, and all the rest.

People keep using the term "bad data". There's no such thing! There's only data that's generated by processes *the data analyst* doesn't fully understand. When an analyst fully understands the data-generating process, the worst that can happen is the analysis is uninformative.

Another rant about why it’s dangerous to trust “experts” with no credibility in epi or virology, and obviously a minimal understanding of fundamental molecular biology or ID diagnostics

I understand that sentiment, but no one seems willing to pay more for narrow spectrum abx. Bankruptcy looms if the volume of sales are dramatically lower, but prices are the same. Delinked Market Entry Rewards could set such priorities.
