generally what makes Christians soft and gutless isn't that there are compassionate teachings in our faith, but because no one with power has your back if you have to stand up for the teachings outsiders don't like.

Well, he's basically written that authorities have authority for a reason and it is not unreasonable to bow to the authority where appropriate. This is easily appropriated by people in the circumstances you describe above to say that siding with the State is called for.

well, what is interesting in this case, is that these people are not siding with the state, formally, but with the social power. It's one thing to say "follow the law" it's another to say, "follow the crowd."

Ah, yes. That's a good point, easily obscured in modern democracy. The mob always thinks itself the government, but nowadays the line is harder to draw.
