It's still so weird to me that the Jesuits literally started as an organization of guys who viewed themselves as the Pope's soldiers, unquestioningly loyal to him, and then 500 years later they're the most liberal and anti-papal group within the RCC

his main quarrel seems to be that Jesuitism has always had the character of "even if Catholicism is false, simply believing in it and obeying the pope is good" - I do not know how true this is. But it's certainly a slippery idea.

I think he's sort of unfair to Loyola himself even though I'm not RC but he's spot on about the questions of religion. The point of doubt when it exists is to come to know the truth, not to endlessly obey falsehoods because it has some benefit

this might address my question? What falsehoods? What benefit?

I'm gonna have to dig for where he explains the specific things bc like I said he fills it with so much flourish

Oh by the by, I know this is outside your wheelhouse, but would you happen to be aware of an equivalent catechetical resource to Metropolitan Hilarion's volume 2 https://www.amazon.com/Orthodox-Christianity-II-Doctrine-Teaching/dp/0881414611 … but for Catholics?

I'd greatly appreciate it. Haven't had a luck asking the Catholics I know because they're not familiar with the resource. Best I've gotten so far is Ratzinger's intro.
