size is 5x8, which gives us 5.5x8.5 but a half inch of that space is "bleed", which is basically a quarter-inch margin-that-isn't, In other words, I better not put anything important in that space because it's going to get cut off, but probably not completely.

there would be outer bevel or bezel or whatever, but that's bleed-space and it's not clear how much will actually end up on the final cover. Plus the side to the left needs to work okay with the spine.
