I guess if somehow part of the reactor, during a meltdown, got under tremendous heat and pressure which could not escape, that part might explode when the containment eventually fails,

I should clarify that when I said it couldn't explode I only meant the reactor exploding like a bomb (or something similar). Steam explosions, in the event of a meltdown or other such exigency, are, however, quite likely. Hot steam reacting w/ liquid metal will certainly explode.
