when most people say "we are equal" they mean either political equality - which is difficult to define - or complete equality. Complete equality is complete similarity. Political equality comes at the cost of subordination to a greater power that keeps things equal.

any assumption that humans are innately different is an assumption they are innately unequal, as any difference which is not merely superficial - that had real-world impact - would impact also equality, The claim is that diversity is a huge deal but also doesn't make us unequal.

The general claim - that humans are neurologically identical or equal (anyway) is known to be false, but presently there is nothing that can be done with this information as it would imply that political equality is probably a sham, a game induced by the real political power.

Mainly, this issue is induced simply because most people view competency - as it impacts moral reasoning and success - as the measure of human-ness, the common trope that the insane (particularly the morally mad) are inhuman demonstrates this mentality.
