    What irks the open web crowd isn’t that Safari is the new IE, but that Apple wields utter control over iOS—and most users are happy w/ that.

        @gruber Weren’t “Most Users” happy with IE back in the heyday of it’s dominance?

        @gak_pdx That makes Apple the new Microsoft, not Safari the new IE. And Apple exerts far more control over iOS than Microsoft w/ Windows.

        @gruber It sounds like many want a highly portable, if inevitably mediocre, platform over a polished if native one.

        @reneritchie wait, so what exactly are you saying is inevitably mediocre? asking for browser improvements is asking for a better web @gruber

      4. Rene Ritchie ‏@reneritchie 6 Jul 2015

        @spencenow @gruber But does everything need to be on the web, or would some things be better native?

        @reneritchie no doubt native UX wins on mobile, all things being equal. that said Safari will be "inevitably mediocre" if neglected @gruber

        @spencenow @reneritchie After the Safari and web dev sessions from WWDC last month, hard for me to take seriously “neglected” as adjective.

        @gruber I'm happy to hear that! @reneritchie

        @gruber ... u need some good stats that users are happy with control of iOS to really make that statement. Vendor lock in != happiness

        @gruber if Apple adopted a neutral position and implemented all the standards the iOS choice wouldn’t be much of a problem

        @mburgosh That’s not “neutral”.

        @gruber I guess is not. I just think that this is frustrating as a user and as a developer:pic.twitter.com/i5Lo3YIodW

      @gruber But I don’t want to. Because I like iOS and I like the choices Apple make, most of the time. The compromises are small overall.

    2. Rhys Morgan ‏@rhysmorgan 6 Jul 2015 Cardiff, Wales

      @gruber Also, the idea that iOS users are in any meaningful way “locked in” is so clearly wrong. I could just up and buy an Android phone.

        @gruber Have users experienced an iOS that Apple doesn’t control? If they haven’t how do you know which they prefer?

        @joranelias That’s not what I said.

        @gruber Huh. Maybe I need more than 140 chars to understand what you meant then, cause I’m not seeing what you mean.

        @joranelias @gruber You replaced 'happy w/' with 'prefer', which is not what he said.

      5. Joran Elias ‏@joranelias 8 Jul 2015

        @brentous I see, so they are happy but they might not actually prefer it. Got it.

        @joranelias Why are you building a new narrative instead of addressing the points @gruber actually made?

        @brentous Huh? I thought I was agreeing with and acknowledging your point.
