So what's the dealio with UK PMs being forced to resign? Seems like there's no official mechanism for the party to take him out. So if everybody hates him they just ride into the next election together and get killed for being so insanely divided?

Vote of no confidence takes place either within the party or parliament, a general election is called or ultimately the head of state has to remove them.

His party held a vote of no confidence that he won and party rules say there can't be another vote for a year. But the party may change their rules to have another vote
Similar thing happened with last PM but the party said "we're going to change the rules" so she resigned

Being the prime minister of the UK has evolved into a test of fortitude to determine how long you can withstand the frequent internal political and media throw-over coups.
