I had a dream my friends house was heavily infested with rats and my solution was small caliber firearms. I woke up and looked up the solution and that turned out to be a very dumb solution, there are much better options.

*Really* small-caliber firearms are actually quite good for this. A primer-powered .22 from a revolver is low-powered enough that it probably won't go all the way through a wooden floor and quiet enough that it won't interrupt dinner conversation.
