No, their screen readers don't need the "ALT" button to work, that's all passed over tags in the HTML It's there for no reason!

what if it’s intended to be transmissive. if i see so many alt buttons bc they’re enormous i too mightbe encouraged to put an image description on my media. u kno?

that's negatively impacted 99% of users experiences for an extremely tenuous hypothesis about how it might for some small share of them improve their utilization of a feature aimed at 1% of users any PM making this trade off should be crucified

it's not tenuous it very obviously makes people aware of alt text

n = 1 i added an alt text for the first time because of twitter giving it first class support
